It is understood that because green leafy vegetables are not easy to preserve, the supply of ocean-going ships generally can only support about 20 days. However, due to the inability to solve the problem of medium quality, illumination and temperature, and the lack of overall planning and design, there are still no successful cases of growing vegetables on board.

Ocean three This project launched the first time to introduce the special functions of marine microorganisms into soilless culture, focusing on the study of two key factors, such as matrix and nutrition, and using its ability to degrade various organic compounds, as well as its own ability to produce plant auxin, developed a new type of full nutrition matrix and nutrient solution suitable for the continuous cultivation of vegetables on the ocean-going vessels, which solves the water retention of the substrate in the vegetable cultivation of the ocean ship, increases the nutrition ingredient, and makes the cultivation simple, and forms the standardized operation Low-priced solutions. 

Zeng, the Third Marine Institute of the State Oceanic Administration, said the project combines biological factors such as cultivation methods, types of vegetables, illumination, ventilation, temperature, nutrition, rotation cycle, etc., according to the overall planning of the ship's space utilization, voyage number and time.

After harvesting the first crop of vegetables, the current second round of vegetable cultivation has begun to work, there are lettuce vegetables, lettuce, bok choy, the Netherlands Red Jade, small chives, cucumbers and so on. The staff selected the short growing period (30 days ~ days) of vegetables, and will be the nursery and cultivation interspersed, so as to ensure that every 25 days or so to harvest a crop. 

The sea three sent a of scientific research personnel with the ship to the sea, in order to further study which vegetables suitable for planting, as well as water and fertilizer control frequency, photoperiod and so on.
